Throughout Tamil Nadu there are hill stations. Hill stations are towns located in high altitudes which are used as places to avoid the summer heat. People flock to them for rejuvenation, peaceful walks in nature, and fun activities. Tamil Nadu offers some of the most beautiful hill stations. Trekking, Hang-gliding, fishing and golf are just some of the activities you can take part in on these hill stations. Some of the most popular are Kodaikanal, Ooty, Coonoor, and Kotagiri, although there are countless more. Kodaikanal is secluded 2100 meters above water, in the beautiful Palani Hills. Kodaikanal, meaning “gift of the forest,” is an ideal summer resort for the travel bluffs of the southern plains. Ooty, the queen of hill stations, of South India is known for extraordinary beauty. It includes a lake, large gardens and a 20 million year old fossil tree trunk. It is the most popular hill station in the south.

The capital of Tamil Nadu, Chennai, is the destination for many who are looking for five-star luxury accomodations. The Taj Coromandel is considered the finest hotel in South India, where it epitomizes the cultural refinements of the South. The Taj Coromandel is located in the heart of Chennai’s business and residential districts. The hotel is close to shopping and entertainment areas such as SIPA’S Craftlink, which is a fair price shop that supports local artisans. George Town also is a wonderful local place to shop. Many of the sellers have been there for years devoting themselves to the perfection of one craft. Bargaining down prices is expected while shopping.

The beaches bring in a lot of tourism for the state. Muttukkadu Beach is ideal for motorized boating or wind surfing. It is also a fisherman’s dream with a large amount of local fish. Kanyakumari beach is known for being surrounded by three seas, the Bay of Bengal, the Arabian Sea, and the Indian Ocean. The multi-colored sand brings in droves of people to experience some of the best sunrises and sunsets in the world. Kurusadai Islands is an ecological paradise, which is notable for its coral reefs, rare species of marine life, and dolphins.

Tamil Nadu has many amazing monuments that attract visitors also. It is often referred to as the cradle of Dravidian culture. Temple towns are popular tourist destinations and also draw pilgrams who come for religious reasons. Huge temples with their towing spires, intricate rock carvings, and religious ancestry are found throughout Tamil Nadu. Temples here often known for their gopuram. Gopuram refers to the rising tower which is present at the entrance to temples. Hinduism is still largely practiced throughout Tamil Nadu and has an effect on the larger culture.Visitors to the temples will often gather at sunrise. The most famous temple is the Brihadisvara Temple which is over 1000 years old.

Another popular place to visit is the Mudumalai Wildlife Sanctuary which is home to many deer, elephants and tigers.
