Tamil Nadu has more than 250 engineering colleges. Because of the large number of trained engineers available, the state has become famous for its transportation sector.
In addition, one of the quickest growing job sectors is outsourcing. Many companies in the United States and around the world turn to Tamil Nadu to work on their back-end operations. There are several market research companies and equity research companies that have a strong presence in Tamil Nadu.
The town of Sivakasi is a leader in the production of safety matches and fireworks. 80% of the safety matches and 90% of the fireworks produced in India have their orgins in Sivakasi. It also is a leader in the printing industry. Sivakasi is unique in that it has a 100% employment rate. This is very rare in the state of Tamil Nadu.

Recently there has been an increase in the number of jobs available in the electronics manufacturing industry. Companies such as Nokia, Motorola and Dell have set up shop in Tamil Nadu, relying on workers here to create items such as circuit boards and cell phone handsets.
Although there are a large number of jobs available in Tamil Nadu, there is also a large population, many of whom are illiterate. Employers often pay their employees low wages because they know there are many other workers waiting to step in if someone is not willing to work at the salary they set.
