Tamil Nadu, India Tourism and Travel Information

In the Southern Indian Peninsula lies a beautiful state called Tamil Nadu. It is on the shores of the Bay of Bengal in the midst of the deep blue Indian Ocean. A combination of a tropical climate, cooler hill resorts, friendly people, and ancient culture make Tamil Nadu an ideal holiday destination for people that are looking for a stunning mix of beauty, traditions, and history. It is home to 55 million people of different religions and languages. It is considered to be the second of the most urbanized states in India, with eight cities exceeding 1 million people in population. The capital of the state is Chennai, which until 1996 was known as Madras. Chennai is the fourth largest city in India, and is known as the auto capital of India. Chennai is also home to Marina Beach, one of the longest beaches in the world at 7.5 miles of beautiful beach, surf, and sun.

Tamil Nadu is a land that has existed since prehistoric times. Along with the land, it has a culture and language that has lasted just as long. The Indian culture and artwork of this region are considered to be some of the oldest in the world. The language, Tamil, has been documented as being around for at least 5000 years in written form, but was spoken long before that. English is also widely spoken and understood in the most educated parts of the state. Although Tamil is the official language, Telegu, Malayalam, Hindi and other Indian languages are also spoken throughout Tamil Nadu. The literacy rate is considered to be relatively high because a large portion of the state is rural. However, there is still approximatly 25% of people who do not know how to read. Although Tamil Nadu has grown rapidly, it has still held tight to its old traditions and heritage.

The people by and large lead a very relaxed and peaceful lifestyle. They have deep interest in music, literature, and dance. Music and festivals are a daily occurrence in Tamil Nadu and residents spend a great deal of time with family and friends celebrating their culture and heritage. The people here also spend time making some of the most exquisite handicrafts, which include intricate carved designs in wood, stone, and metal. People in Tamil Nadu are also great lovers of food. Agriculture is the main livelihood of most of the population and the crops of sugarcane, bananas, potatoes, teas, and spices are not only exported, but used in many of their dishes. Most food in Tamil Nadu is made up of rice, grains, vegetables and lentils. Meals usually contain a rice dish along with a vegetable dish. Meat such as chicken and mutton are also eaten.

Since they also have such a large coastline, they can also experience year round fishing and farming. The fish, shrimp, and crabs abound and make for the most delectable meals. Coimbatore Tourism is also popular, being the 2nd largest city in Tamil Nadu.

Tamil Nadu has a large tourist industry because of the beautiful coastlines, rich heritage, and ancient temples. The state has a well-developed transportation network, which allows people to take in the most rural or urban parts of the state. It includes national and state highways, trains, and airports in Chennai, Madurai, and Tiruchchirappall. There are major seaports in Chennai and Tuticorin. People come from everywhere to visit this gorgeous land, and it is well worth the visit.
